Tameside Independence Day brings out 'New Age Pensioners'

Town Cryer and particpants at Independence Day eventIndependence Day 12 March at Ashton Town Hall saw 350 people battle the wind and rain on one of the wildest mornings imaginable, to prove that age is no barrier to Tameside’s over 50’s wanting to know about what’s on in Tameside.

Tameside 3rd Sector Coalition (T3SC) as joint organisers with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC) Adult Services worked alongside Volunteer Centre Tameside, Friends of Gorse Hall, Tameside Allotment Society, the Cranberries,  Ksush Ahmdid, Hyde Festival Orchestra, Stalybridge Flower Club and many more including the 'Action for Blind' bus which was in the Market Square.

Community Radio provided the music and there was lots of networking and community spirit generated. Thank you to everyone who made the event so successful.

The updated Lust for Life containing listings of many of the clubs, groups and activities on offer in Tameside is now available from local libraries, Council offices, Ashton Tourist Information Centre and from T3SC. Contact Eden Carruthers at TMBC or Colin Kirby at T3SC.

Take part in a French exchangeFrench Exchange image of groups

For four years, a Tameside group of people with learning disabilities and their carers exchanged visits with a similar group from Stalybridge's twin town of Armentières in north east France. One year the French group came here, and the following year the Tameside group went to France. The visits were very successful indeed, and enjoyed by all who took part. The group from Armentières was a dancing group called ‘Les Papillons Blancs’ (The White Butterflies), and every year they provided an evening’s entertainment.

Stalybridge Voluntary Twinning Association would like to re-establish an exchange with the Papillons Blancs, and we are looking for another Tameside group that would like to take part, hopefully starting in 2009.

If you represent a group that is interested, please email svta2005@firenet.uk.net or ring
0161 303 2026 or 0779 2325 877.

Opening Doors for Older People’ Project

We don’t just point you to services anymore we will help you get to them!

The ‘Opening Doors for Older People’ project is a two year, government funded project that aims to help older people remain independent, active and well at home. It is aimed at people who do not currently receive formal social care services from the Council. The project offers older people a free, confidential CORA (Community Options for Remaining Active) Check and Support home visit to help determine what services are available to them in the local community.

Following the CORA Check and Support visit, people are given a Personalised Information Pack that currently signposts them to a range of services that can help them remain independent, healthy and active at home. However, people have told us that they would prefer us to help put them in touch with services, rather than just leave the information with them. Therefore, as part of our continual improvements to the CORA Check and Support service, we offer users the option of our CORA Co-ordinators at Age Concern Tameside making referrals on behalf of the older person. This means that more older people will be engaged with supportive services and agencies within the community.

If you would like to request a CORA Check and Support visit for yourself or someone you know, please contact the CORA Coordinator on 0161 308 5007 or email cora@ageconcerntameside.com
