What’s going on in the world of

workforce development?

An introduction to workforce development, the government’s one workforce vision and how partners plan to support you in your role.

Workforce development – what does that mean?

2020 Children and Young People's Workforce Strategy and the one workforce tool

In December 2008, the Government published the 2020 Children and Young People's Workforce Strategy.

This sets out the Government's vision that everyone who works with children and young people should be ambitious for every child and young person, excellent in their practice, committed to partnership and integrated working, and respected and valued as professionals.

Whatever role people play in families, children and young people’s lives, the aim of this strategy is to ensure that they all have the skills and knowledge to do the best job they possibly can to help children and young people develop and succeed across all the outcomes which underpin Every Child Matters: being safe, staying healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic well-being.

Locally all areas are supported by the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) – a national learning and development body. As well as providing great information, they provide funding for every area.

The CWDC created a tool (with the help of young people, volunteers and paid workers) for all local areas to assess their workforce strategy against. In Tameside, partners already have a really good workforce strategy for children and young people’s services, but the One Workforce tool has brought us the opportunity to review this strategy.

Lots of people in Tameside have responded, a greater number than other areas in the north west and the whole Tameside research has been sent to the CDWCouncil for review. A new Tameside workforce strategy group will be formed in October of this year and it will refresh the Tameside Children and Young People’s workforce strategy.

You can find out more information about the strategy by going to www.tameside.gov.uk/cypp/workforcedev

There has been very little research done previously about how the voluntary, community and faith sector feel about all of this – so T3SC did their own research and there were over one hundred responses from people who volunteer as trustees, administrator, scouts, guides, sports coaches.

To find out all about our local research go to pages 7 and 8 of the
Funky lizard booklet.
